REMOVAL OF TWO 6m x 10m BALL MILLS FROM MT TODD GOLD MINE 2001

REPLACEMENT OF THE ELUTION COLUMN AT UNION REEFS GOLD MINE

RELOCATION OF DARWIN CONTAINER CRANE

JOB: Relocation of the Port of Darwin Container Crane from Fort Hill Wharf to East Arm Wharf including Structural and Electrical Modifications.

CLIENT: NT Government of Australia - Department of Infrastructure, Planning & Environment.

CONTRACT VALUE $3,500,000.00
PROJECT START DATE: 27 September 2002
COMPLETION DATE: 10 June 2003

TO MODIFY AND RELOCATE THE CONTAINER CRANE FROM FORT HILL WHARF TO EAST ARM WHARF

  • Procurement of the Container Crane contract.
  • Weigh the crane to enable the centre of gravity and an accurate weight to be calculated. The weight of the crane after the modification was 850 Tonnes.
  • Check the frame for level and boom tip alignment prior to and during the modification and after the relocation.
  • Fabricate and install four 250T lifting attachments and anchors to guy ropes and the temporary support towers.
  • Design and install temporary work platforms, access ways, support structures and bracing.
  • Fabricate new portal sections, in total 40 Tonnes of grade 350 plate was used.
  • Reposition HV & LV cables.
  • Install fabricated portal sections to strengthen the existing components and provide the new location for the bogie assemblies at the new rail gauge.
  • Immobilise the crane to widen the gauge, utilising engineered support bases, support towers and hydraulic lifting assemblies capable of supporting 400 Tonnes each.
  • Relocate the landside legs and bogies to the new location, check alignment and weld into position.
  • Preparation for relocation of crane to East Arm.
  • Relocation of crane to East Arm Wharf using a heavy lift vessel, The Happy Buccaneer with two 550T cranes on board.
  • Recommission the crane at East Arm Wharf.

IMMOBILISING THE CRANE AND WIDENING THE GAUGE

  • This involved skating out of legs and bogie assembly, support by two 50T cranes, total assembly weighed 85T.

RELOCATION FROM FORT HILL ONTO TRANSPORT

  • The first project of it's kind in the Northern Territory; the manoeuvring of the Container Crane onboard the Happy Buccaneer transport ship drew a crowd of onlookers to Stokes Hill Wharf. This is physically the biggest lift ever performed in the NT.

RECOMMISSIONING OF THE CRANE AT EAST ARM

  • The crane was commissioned after the successful relocation to East Arm Wharf with practical completion received on 10 June 2003.
  • The ultimate success of this project is attributed to many hours of planning as well as the dedication and specialised experience that SLE was able to apply to this project.
